After much thought, I have decided I would like to change my thesis idea. As you can see from my previous posts, I have been working to research how celebrity re branding, specifically that of Kesha's (formerly, Ke$ha), communicates events such as drug abuse, self abuse and sexual abuse, using her most recent documentary, "Rainbow the film". While I find that we should all have a firm understanding of the concepts explain above, I feel like I won't be able to make new discoveries from this research.
I will be creating a new thesis around a concept just as important to me, aging. Aging is inevitable. It will happen to you, it will happen to me, it will happen to our parents, our parent's parents and so it goes.
The nature of my project will analyze how the actions between the genders in the assisted living environment can communicate the experiences of the residents to employees and how the residents means of communications effect how employees communicate to residents. This project will be an extension of my ethnography project where I have already collected data analyzing how the different genders respond to the environment.
To continue my research I will duplicate my previous methodology of observing interactions between both residents and staff in an assisted living facility. Applying both observation and interview is important to the success of this research as I will be able to gain an understanding of the interactions between residents and employees in the specific community. I will conduct interviews with employees of multiple genders and races to understand their experiences in this environment, how employees communicate to their residents and how that is received by residents.
To support my decision to conduct both observation and interview I have pulled information from Ethnographic Choicesby Bollinger and Menchaca.
My observation will include mostly note taking but I will also participate as much as I find appropriate. Observation will help improve my experience as, “When you become more immersed in a community and learn the community ways of being, you begin to see things from a different prospective.” (64)
After observing I will conduct my interviews. Having the period of observation will allow potential for even more questions to be asked. My Interviews will be in person as “face-to-face interview is the most advantageous… this approach allows you to both see the body language and hear the voice and tone of the participant. The combination of nonverbal and verbal signals gives you a fuller understanding of their experiences, thoughts and emotions.” (101)
