Data Post 1

Data Post 1

As you may have noticed, I will be creating my thesis based on an analysis centered around Kesha's "Rainbow- The Film" documentary. To begin to get an idea on how to collect and analyze my data I decided to take an additional look at the film to analyze more of the thoughts and metaphors used throughout the films entirety.

While I was expecting to see themes such as drug abuse, eating disorder struggles and the idea of re creating an image or "rebranding", I was surprised to find other metaphors such as "The Third Eye" and a praying Mantis appear almost as often, if not more often than the expected themes. In addition to my previously decided topics of abuse (sexual, self and drug) in pop culture, I will also study the idea of anxiety and depression and how it is communicated by celebrities. Below I have included screenshots from the documentary with notes on some of these ideas and how they are expressed in the form of a metaphor through the documentary.

These shots are from the beginning of the film which starts with Kesha falling into water, drowning and sinking into, what I perceived as, an unknown realm. In that realm we see Kesha meeting old Ke$ha in what appears to be rehab and the present day Kesha is trying to shake Ke$ha awake. This sets up the basis of the documentary as her "rebranding" started during her experiences while in rehab for her eating disorder. The film ends with a message "Asking for help isn't a sign of weakness. Making the decision to work on yourself is the bravest thing you can do."

We see the theme of a praying mantis in the very beginning of the film only briefly to a point where it is forgotten throughout the documentary but see it appear once again towards the ending which caused me to wonder why this was symbolic. It could be as simple as a connection between nature and the song praying but we can conclude that the metaphor is more than that and I am interested to see how this will be perceived by my focus groups.
Even more commonly we see regular reference to the third eye, more commonly in moments of struggle. This is another element that is a metaphor for something deeper.
Finally I have a graph that shows how often different topics came up throughout the documentary. From this I was able to realize other areas I can use for research and topics I can bring up in my focus group that will come later down the line.
